How long does a septic infecton last without a host?

You can't have a septic infection with out a host....the infection has to have somethig to breed on to multiply to even become septic. Sepsis is generally an infection that has gotten into the blood stream and is now attacking the other internal organs and disrupting organ systems causing failure and possibly death.
