You should NEVER EVER, try to live up to the expectations of someone based on their EX. That's a no no! (Slaps your hand and says "bad , bad bad bad!). People are people, and we are all built differently and respond in different ways to different things. If they don't like you, they just don't! Find someone who does. However, I do think that maybe you may have some problem with boundary issues.
