Should I submit my resume or get an informational interview?

I was given the suggestion by an employee to submit my resume for a completely different position in health care as an entry level istant in ophthalmology. I am a manager with a sales history who is being downsized. This will be entirely new for me. Should I submit my resume, not knowing enough about the job, or shall I ask for an informational interview where they ask about my resume anyway?
